The Never Land Baby Garden

033Inspired by JM Barrie’s Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up, The Never Land Baby Garden is a place for bereaved families to come and visit while remembering their precious babies they have lost. The garden is situated in a quiet, peaceful part of Brimington Crematorium and is a beautiful, calming place to come to sit and reflect in lovely surroundings. The garden was developed by Chesterfield and District Joint Crematorium in conjunction with Chesterfield Sands.

032The garden area has been left in its natural state with trees scattered around, displaying different shades and coloured leaves with weeping willows bowing gracefully. In the garden there are three strewing areas, where families can have their baby’s ashes scattered. There is seating and a winding path that leads from the entrance of the garden to a little house with pretty plants in window boxes, this is a playhouse for children to play in. Inside there is a table and chairs, toys to play with and Peter Pan themed colouring sheets and pencils. This is called ‘Wendy’s House’.

The Strewing Areas

006These areas are for the strewing of ashes. Inkeeping with the Never Land theme, each area is roped off and has a tree and plaque in the middle with its own inscription, a quote from the book.

Peter Pan Strewing Area – “So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Never Never Land.”

Tinkerbell Strewing Area – “You know that place between sleeping and awake, that place where you can still remember dreaming? That’s where I’ll always think of you.”

The Little Darlings Strewing Area – “Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.”

The garden will be developed gradually, we will be adding a memorial for individual plaques to be placed on, and we are looking at placing woodland animal memorials around the garden also. We welcome any ideas from bereaved families on how to make our beautiful garden even more comforting and special for them. Please see our picture gallery for more photos, and please feel free to come along to Brimington Crematorium and visit our beautiful Never Land Garden.
